Tattoo Healing Stages: Day by Day Guide

Days 1-3: Fresh Ink

Your tattoo is essentially an open wound. It will look vibrant and bold, possibly with some redness and swelling around the area. You might notice clear plasma or a small amount of ink weeping — this is completely normal. Keep the initial bandage on for the time your artist recommended (usually 2-4 hours, or overnight with a second-skin wrap). Wash gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

Days 4-7: Peeling Begins

The surface starts to flake and peel, similar to a sunburn. The colours may look dull or cloudy. This is completely normal — the top layer of damaged skin is shedding. Do NOT pick or scratch the peeling skin. Let it fall off naturally. Continue washing twice daily and apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser.

Days 7-14: The Itchy Phase

This is when most people struggle. The tattoo itches as the skin regenerates underneath. Some peeling may continue. The tattoo might look slightly milky or hazy — this is the new skin forming over the ink. Slap (do not scratch) if it itches. Keep moisturising. Avoid soaking in water — no baths, pools, or hot tubs.

Days 14-30: Settling In

The surface looks healed but deeper layers are still repairing. Colours continue to settle and sharpen. The milky haze clears up and your tattoo starts looking like the finished product. Continue moisturising daily. You can now return to normal activities but keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight.

Month 2-3: Fully Healed

Your tattoo is now fully healed through all skin layers. The ink has settled to its final depth and vibrancy. If you notice any spots that need touching up, contact your artist. Most studios offer free touch-ups within the first few months. To keep your tattoo looking fresh for years: always apply SPF 30+ sunscreen when exposed to sun, stay hydrated, and moisturise regularly.
